In Arabic, Badiyat al-Sham means Eastern Desert. It is a desert region that stretches from the northern part of Saudi Arabia to the eastern part of Jordan, southern Syria, and western Iraq on the Arabian Peninsula, and is a plateau up to 500m above sea level. The southern part is commonly called Hammad. The annual rainfall is less than 125mm. It is not a sandy desert, but is mostly barren land covered with lava and rocks, and since ancient times it has been an impassable barrier between the Levant region on the Mediterranean side and Mesopotamia. Currently, major roads and oil pipelines cross the desert. The only inhabitants are nomads and Arabian horse breeders.

アラビア語では，東方砂漠を意味するバーディヤト・アッシャーム。アラビア半島のサウジアラビアの北部から，ヨルダン東部，シリア南部，イラク西部に広がる砂漠地帯で，標高 500mまでの高原をなし，南部は一般にハンマーダと呼ばれている。年降水量は 125mm以下。砂の砂漠ではなく，大部分は溶岩や岩石におおわれた不毛の地で，古来から地中海側のレバント地方とメソポタミア間の通りがたい障壁であった。現在は幹線道路や石油パイプラインが砂漠を横断している。住民として遊牧民やアラブ馬の飼育者らがいるのみである。
