Four-toothed crab (Pugettia quadridens)

Japanese: ヨツハモガニ(四歯藻蟹) - ヨツハモガニ（英語表記）Pugettia quadridens

A decapod crustacean of the spider crab family (illustration). It is found throughout Japan from Hokkaido to Kyushu, and along the Yellow Sea coast of Korea and China, living among seaweed on reefs. Its slow movements and greenish brown or chocolate color make it easy to confuse with the surrounding seaweed. What's more, it is even harder to find because it cuts pieces of seaweed and attaches them to hook-shaped hairs behind its forehead and in its gill area. It is pear-shaped, about 3 cm long and 2.5 cm wide, with the tip of its rostrum slightly open.

十脚目クモガニ科の甲殻類（イラスト）。北海道から九州までの日本全国，韓国および中国の黄海沿岸に分布し，岩礁の海藻の間にすんでいるカニで，動きがにぶく，緑褐色ないしチョコレート色の体色が周囲の海藻とまぎらわしい。そのうえ，海藻を切り取って額の後方や鰓域（さいいき）にある鉤（かぎ）形の毛につけているため，ますます見つけにくい。甲長3cm，甲幅2.5cmほどのヨウナシ型で，額角（がつかく）の先端がやや開く。
