〘Noun〙① (A variation of "Onyugi (new tree)") A split tree planted at the base of a kadomatsu (New Year's pine) during the New Year. A type of toshigi (old tree) and firewood for New Year. Used in Nagano and Aichi prefectures. This was interpreted as "oni-gi (demon tree)" and was thought to be planted to scare off demons, so it is also called oni-uchigi (demon-attacking tree). Mikamagi (official firewood) . [Season: New Year]② A tree planted at a gate on New Year's Eve, the 14th day of the New Year. ※Haikai poem, Heikai-shika-katame (1783), New Year: "After the pine trees were cut down by the Edo samurai, they would mark the firewood as oni-gi by drawing twelve horizontal lines in ink."
