Regarding the analysis of sound in the inner ear, there was the resonance theory of Helmholtz and the telephone theory of W. Rutherford. The former considered the hair cells to be resonators, while the latter said that the cochlea worked like a telephone and that sound analysis was carried out in the brain, but both were merely hypotheses and not experimental results.
