A small field mouse (illustration) that builds spherical nests out of leaves among the stems of grasses, mainly those of the Poaceae family, such as Miscanthus. A mammal in the order Rodentia and family Muridae. It is found in Europe and central Asia, and in Japan in Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu, from the plains to altitudes of up to 1,200 m. It is 6 cm long and 7 cm long with a tail. Its dorsal body color is orange or yellowish brown, and its ventral side is white to grayish white. Its long tail can be wrapped around objects, and it can skillfully climb up and down stems vertically using it as support. It lives in grasslands, thickets such as reeds near water, and grain fields. ススキなどおもにイネ科の草の茎の間に葉で球形の巣をつくる小さなノネズミ(イラスト)。齧歯(げつし)目ネズミ科の哺乳類。ヨーロッパとアジアの中部に分布し,日本では本州,四国,九州の平地から標高1200mまでに分布する。体長6cm,尾長7cm。体色は背側がオレンジ色,または黄褐色,腹側は白色から灰白色。尾は長く,物に巻きつけることができ,尾を支えにして茎を垂直に巧みに上り下りする。草地,水辺のアシなどの茂み,穀物畑などにすむ。
