A German general electrical equipment manufacturer and one of the world's leading electrical equipment conglomerates. It began in 1847 when Werner Siemens and Johann Georg Halske founded the Siemens & Halske Telegraph Manufacturing Company. Initially, the company focused on the manufacture of telegraph equipment and the laying of telegraph cables, but later expanded its business to Russia, the UK, France, and other countries. It also established a monopoly in Europe in the low-voltage sector, including telegraph lines and undersea electric cables, by laying an undersea telegraph cable between Ireland and the US. In 1866, it succeeded in manufacturing generators and developed its high-voltage division. In 1897, it was reorganized as a joint-stock company called Siemens & Halske AG, but all of the shares were owned by the Siemens family. During the European depression of 1900-01, it acquired many companies. In 1903, the company's heavy electrical division merged with Schuckert to form Siemens-Schuckertwerke, which, together with Siemens und Halske, whose main business was the light electrical division (communications equipment), became the core of the Siemens Conzern. After World War II, the company was hit hard by the confiscation of its overseas assets and assets in the German Democratic Republic (East Germany), but it avoided asset division and expanded its business areas in line with the subsequent economic development of the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany), experiencing rapid growth from the 1950s onwards. In 1966, the two companies merged, changing their name to the current one and integrating the operations of their major subsidiaries. The company has subsidiaries in many countries, including Europe and Canada. The company's business activities include the heavy electrical equipment division for power generation and transmission equipment, industrial and transportation equipment, the communications equipment division for telephones, digital switching systems (EWSD) and communication systems, the data systems division for data processing equipment, data transmission equipment and railway signaling systems, the plant and facilities division for plant engineering, power distribution and drive circuits, and automation, the medical equipment division for X-ray equipment and electronic medical equipment, and the parts division for IC cards and ISDN chips.
