This hymn is dedicated to the Indian sun goddess Savitri and is one of the most important hymns for Hindus. It is also called the Savitri Hymn after Savitri. Gayatri is a metrical form from the Vedic period, consisting of three lines of eight syllables each, totaling 24 syllables. Originally, all hymns written in this form were called Gayatri, but one line from the Rig-Veda praising the goddess Savitri, Book 3, verse 62, verse 10, is revered as the essence of the entire Rig-Veda hymns.
