Ruins that retain traces of mining to obtain stone or minerals. They often contain tools and other artifacts, and are often surrounded by the remains of workshops or the residences of people involved in the mining. In Poland, flint mining sites dating back to the Late Paleolithic period are known. An investigation of a Neolithic flint mining site in Britain revealed that a shaft was dug using a cow's shoulder blade as a shovel, and the flint was heated and then peeled off with deer antlers. In Austria, a Bronze Age copper mining site with multiple tunnels several hundred meters long is known. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
