A creed widely used in the Western Church. The original text is in Latin. It is also called the Quicumque vult Creed because of the opening phrase "everyone who desires salvation." Since the 9th century, it has been named after Athanasius, Bishop of Alexandria, who fought against the Arian sect, and has been believed to have been written by Athanasius. However, the prevailing view today is that it was established in southern Gaul by the first half of the 5th century. It consists of about 40 concise sentences and has a different format from the Nicene Creed and the Apostles' Creed. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
