A port town on the Kenai Peninsula in southern Alaska, USA. Population 1,843 (1980). Overlooking Resurrection Bay in the Gulf of Alaska. Founded in 1903 as a supply base for the construction of the Alaska Railroad to the Yukon Valley, the town was named after Secretary of State William H. Seward (1801-72), who purchased Alaska from Russia. With an ice-free port, the town is important as the southern terminus of the railroad, a trade stop, and a tourist center on the Kenai Peninsula, focusing on hunting and fishing. アメリカ合衆国アラスカ州南部,ケナイ半島の港町。人口1843(1980)。アラスカ湾中のレザレクション湾に臨む。ユーコン・バレーへのアラスカ鉄道建設の補給基地として1903年に創設され,その名称はロシアからのアラスカ購入にあたった国務長官シューアドWilliam H.Seward(1801‐72)にちなむ。不凍港を有し,鉄道の南部ターミナルや貿易中継地として,また狩猟や釣りを中心としたケナイ半島観光の中心地として重要。
