Year of death: October 26, 1180 (November 15, 1180) Year of birth: Year of birth unknown. A military commander in the late Heian period. Saburo. A member of the Kanmu Heishi clan. His ancestor was Kamakura Gongoro Kagemasa. His descendants were the head priests of Oba Mikuriya in Sagami for generations. His father was Kagemune. He served his older brother Kageyoshi and Minamoto no Yoshitomo in the Hogen Rebellion (1156) and played an active role. His older brother, who had been at odds with him for some time, continued to ally with the Minamoto clan even after the Heiji Rebellion (1159), but Kagechika, who was temporarily taken prisoner, was spared by the efforts of the Taira clan, and in gratitude he joined the Taira clan. He gave Taira no Kiyomori a fine horse and served as a guardian of the eastern provinces. In 1180, he was mobilized to fight against Prince Mochihito and Minamoto no Yorimasa, who had raised an army, and heard from Ito Tadayasu, the head samurai of the Heike clan for the eastern provinces, that Minamoto no Yoritomo was plotting a rebellion. The first report of Yoritomo's uprising in August of the same year reached Kiyomori from Kagechika. As the commander of the Taira forces in Sagami, he defeated Yoritomo's forces at Ishibashiyama together with his brother Matano Kagehisa. However, Yoritomo fled to Awa, and in October of the same year, he led the armies of Boso and Musashi, entered Kamakura, and advanced further into Suruga. Kagechika was blocked when he tried to join the Taira forces heading eastward, and fled to Kawamurayama. Kagehisa fled to Kyoto, but Kagechika surrendered to Yoritomo, who was stationed at Kisegawa, and his original territory was confiscated. Kagechika, who was left in the custody of Kazusa Hirotsune, was beheaded by Kageyoshi at Katasegawa, on the orders of Yoritomo.
