A religious leader in the Netherlands. Influenced by the Brabant mystic Ruisbroek, he criticized the corruption of the clergy and the hollowing out of faith through his sermons. His preaching was banned in 1383, but in 1381 he cooperated with his comrade Floris (Florentius) Radewijns (1350-1400) to found the Brotherhood of Common Life in his hometown of Deventer. This was a religious order of lay people who lived a devout communal life according to the Bible, based on his spiritual desire, which he called "Devotio moderna," and supported their lives by copying books and teaching.

ネーデルラントの宗教指導者。ブラバントの神秘主義者ロイスブルークの影響を受け，説教を通して聖職者の腐敗と信仰の形骸化を批判。その説教活動は1383年禁止の憂き目を見たが，81年同志ラーデウェインスFloris(Florentius) Radewijns(1350‐1400)と協力して故郷デフェンテルDeventerに〈共同生活兄弟会〉を創設。これは〈新しき信心Devotio moderna〉と呼ばれる彼の求道心にのっとり，聖書に従って敬虔な共同生活を営む平信徒の教団で，書籍の筆写や教育活動によってその生活を支えた。
