Liquor store owner - Sakayayaku

Japanese:
Liquor store owner - Sakayayaku

Taxes imposed on sake brewers. Three taxes are known from medieval Kyoto. The most famous is the sake brewer's tax, which was imposed by the Muromachi Shogunate from 1393 (Meitoku 4) as a monthly tax, which was levied on average 1 kan 500 mon per sake jar per brewer. As a result, many sake brewers lost the privileges they had held as jinin (shrine priest) or yoriudo (referee) of powerful temples and shrines. The other two were the sake koji tax imposed by the Imperial Court and the sake koji tax upper division tax imposed by the Sanmon (Enryakuji Temple). The former was paid by the Sake Brewer's Chief Nakahara (Oshikoji) family as the Honshi portion, and the Hirohashi family as the Choyo portion. As a result of a lawsuit with the Shinto priest of Nishinokyo in Kitano over the production of koji after 1444 (the first year of Bun'an), the sake koji tax was to be paid to the temple gate.
