…　《続日本紀》大宝2年(702)条，和銅6年(713)条に美濃の国司が〈吉蘇（きそ）〉路を切り開いた記事が見えるが，これによって木曾と畿内近国とが結ばれ，木曾山林の開発が緒につくにつれて，美濃･信濃両国が争奪を繰り返すようになったため，879年(元慶3)美濃国恵那郡の所属とされた(《日本三代実録》)。畿内近国の山林の濫採にともない，平安中期ごろから内装材や器物用材など人馬によって搬出可能な軽量ヒノキの供給地として注目されはじめ，やがて木曾の北辺に小木曾荘が成立した。荘園制時代から木曾山で生産されたヒノキ材は，ヒノキの大径木を適当な長さに輪切り，これを蜜柑割りにして製造する〈白木〉類であった。…
