In Sanskrit, it means teacher or master. It is an honorific title for a respected elder or leader of a religious order. A disciple of a guru is called a śiṣya. In Sikhism, which was founded by Nanak, the leader of a religious order is called a guru (Priest). Starting with Nanak, ten gurus led the order in succession.
