A joruri gidayu-bushi (play of the chanting of the chant "Yoshidaya" in Japanese), kabuki (drama), and sewamono (a story about a family that lives in a rural area). It is commonly known as "Yoshidaya." It is said to have been created in 1780 (An'ei 9). The puppet theater version was first performed in May 1793 (Kansei 5) at the Onishi Theater in Osaka under the title "Kuruwa Bunsho." It is a retelling of the first volume, "Yoshidaya," from Chikamatsu Monzaemon's "Yugiri Awa no Naruto" (1712). Fujiya Izaemon, who was disowned after becoming acquainted with the prostitute Yugiri of Ougiya in Shinmachi, visits Yoshidaya one day in December dressed in a shabby paper robe. When Izaemon finds out that Yugiri has been staying with a wealthy man in Awa, he is furious at her infidelity, but soon his heart softens as he learns the woman's true feelings, and his disownment is forgiven and money to buy her freedom is brought to him. It is said that the Kabuki version was first performed in 1808 (Bunka 5) under the title "Kuruwa Bunsho," and was later perfected as a dance-style emotional drama using Gidayu and Tokiwazu (or Kiyomoto). The play centers around Izaemon's Japanese art, which combines humor, pathos, and spirit, and there are many highlights, such as the colorful scenes between him and Yugiri, who is haggard and in love and wearing a sickly headband.
