1889‐1976 He was a telecommunications engineer born in Sweden and active in the United States. He moved to the United States in 1907, graduating from the University of North Dakota, and earned a doctorate in physics from Yale University in 1917. He joined the American Telephone and Telegraph Company, and transferred to Bell Telephone Laboratories when the company's research department was transferred there. He studied high-speed telegraphy, and in 1928 developed the concept of the Nyquist interval in relation to channel bandwidth and telegraph speed. This concept led to the sampling theorem in encoding and decoding. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
