A group of stone Buddha statues carved into the east and north faces of a tuff cave in the grounds of Otani-ji Temple in Otani-cho, Utsunomiya City, Tochigi Prefecture. The statues are made with a high-relief clay finish. On the east wall in front of the Kannon Hall is the main image of Otani-ji Temple, a standing Thousand-Armed Kannon statue (approximately 4 meters tall), and in the side hall facing south, from the right, there are the Shaka Triad, the Yakushi Triad, and the Amida Triad. The Shaka Triad has a central statue of a seated Shaka Nyorai (3.5m) and attendant statues of the bodhisattvas Manjusri and Fugen. The Yakushi Triad was carved into a niche carved 60cm deep and is the earliest work. The central statue is a seated Yakushi (1.1m) and attendant statues are the bodhisattvas Nikko and Gekko. The Amida Triad has a central statue of a seated Amida Nyorai (2.7m) and attendant statues Kannon and Seishi. The Yakushi Triad and Thousand-Armed Kannon were carved in the early Heian period, the Shaka Triad in the middle to late Heian period, and the Amida Triad in the late Heian period to early Kamakura period. The Otani Rock-Carved Buddhas were designated a Special Historic Site in 1954 (Showa 29) and an Important Cultural Property of Japan in 1986.
