The name of the dynasty comes from the fact that Aibak and the emperors who established the dynasty, Ilutūtmish (reigned 1211-36) and Balban (reigned 1266-87), were of slave (Mamluk) origin. The hereditary system of monarchy had not yet been established, and the principle was that the most capable person would become monarch.
