A Japanese nickname for Italian-made Westerns, sometimes called "spaghetti westerns." In English-speaking countries, it is called "spaghetti westerns." After Hollywood film capital, which had been using Cinecittà Studios in Rome and Madrid, Spain as overseas production bases to produce films at low cost, withdrew in the early 1960s, the remaining facilities and staff produced "westerns." The worldwide hit of Sergio Leone's (1921?-89) Western adaptation of Akira Kurosawa's Yojimbo (1961), sparked a huge boom in westerns. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
