Handguard - Tekkou

Japanese: 手甲 - てっこう
Handguard - Tekkou

It covers the back of the hand and wrist and is also called tekou, tesashi, tekka, or kote. It was used during outdoor work to protect against injuries, sunlight, and cold, and was also used for travel and peddling. It is still used today for agricultural work. There are flat and cylindrical shapes, and the flat type has a triangular or semicircular top called a "yama" with a string at the end that is passed through the middle finger and wrapped around the wrist and fastened with a string or kohaze. The cylindrical type has a place for the thumb to pass through. It is often made from dark blue cotton, but stripes and kasuri patterns are also used, and in the Tohoku region beautiful ones are made with white and colored threads. Hunters such as Matagi used furs from chamois, foxes, rabbits, etc.
