Ohiei-no-kami

...It is also called Hiyoshi Shrine or Sanno Gongen. Oyamakui-no-Kami (also called Yamasue-no-Oonushi-no-Kami) of Ushio-san (Ko-Hiei-mine or Hachioji-san) on the eastern ridge of Mt. Hiei was the first local deity to be enshrined there. Later, in 668 (the 7th year of the reign of Tenchi), Oonamuchi-no-Kami of Miwa was enshrined at the mouth of Mt. Hiei as O-Hiei-no-Kami, called Omiya and enshrined at the West Main Shrine, and Oyamakui-no-Kami was enshrined as Ko-Hiei-no-Kami and enshrined at the East Main Shrine. When Enryaku-ji Temple was built on Mt. Hiei, these two deities were revered as the guardian deities of the Tendai sect, and as the Tendai sect rose to prominence, they gained faith in it. ...

…日吉（ひえ）社とか山王権現ともよばれる。比叡山の東の尾根にある牛尾山(小比叡峰または八王子山)の大山咋（おおやまくい）神(別名を山末之大主（やますえのおおぬし）神)が最初にまつられた地主神で，のち668年(天智7)に三輪の大己貴（おおなむち）神を比叡の山口に勧請して大比叡神とし，大宮とよばれて西本宮にまつられ，大山咋神は小比叡神とされて東本宮にまつられた。比叡山中に延暦寺が建立されると，この2神は天台宗守護の護法神として尊崇され，天台宗の興隆にともなって信仰を集めた。…
