They are short, thin hair-like projections that grow densely on the intestinal mucosa (small intestine) and chorion of vertebrates, and spread out in a finger-like or tree-like shape. This significantly increases the surface area, allowing for efficient absorption. They are covered with villous epithelium, and underneath that is a capillary network.
