However, with the advancement of technology, the possibility of a new cruise missile arose in the mid-1970s. The emergence of small, lightweight turbofan engines as propulsion engines enabled small, lightweight, long-range cruise missiles because they consumed less fuel even when flying at low altitudes and low speeds. By connecting the radio altimeter and the control unit via a computer, it became possible to fly at extremely low altitudes, making it harder for the enemy to detect them. Errors that occur in the inertial guidance system during long flights can be corrected by adopting guidance technologies such as terrain contour matching (abbreviated TERCOM), which will be described later, and this has dramatically improved the accuracy of the missile's impact.
