There are about 20 species of Abelia , distributed mainly in East Asia, and all of them are small shrubs that grow in a clump shape. In Japan, A. spathulata Sieb.et Zucc., A. serrata Sieb.et Zucc., and A. tetrasepala (Koidz.) Hara et Kurosawa, which have many variations in tree shape, flower size and color, and sepal shape, are found, and local varieties have been recorded. In addition, the aforementioned A. taiwanensis is rarely found on Amami Oshima.
