In Norse mythology, this term refers to the end of the world of gods and humans. The only complete descriptions of Ragnarok are found in the late 10th-century Icelandic poem Völuspá and the 13th-century Prose Edda by Snorri Sturluson. According to these, after a harsh winter and moral disorder, giants and demons swarm the gods from all directions, and most of the gods die in the fields of Vigríðr, along with the Einherjar. The sun goes dark, the stars go out, the world is burned by the fire giant Surt, and the earth sinks into the sea. After that, the earth is reborn and a new world appears, Odin's son Baldr, the god of light, is resurrected from the dead, and the righteous live in golden-roofed halls. The various allusions to Ragnarok in many other sources show that the concept of Ragnarok was very diverse. According to one poem, the human couple Liv and Lifzrasir will emerge from the forest of Hodmimir where they had been hiding and will recreate the world. The German composer Richard Wagner's musical drama "Götterdämmerung" is the German translation of Ragnarok, which means "Twilight of the Gods."
