1786‐1861 Polish historian and political thinker. Also known as Lelewer. Professor of history at the University of Wolno from 1815 to 1824. Expelled from the university for his ties to nationalistic student organizations. Moved to Warsaw and participated in the November Uprising (1830-31). Became a member of the nationalist government and was appointed chairman of the Towarzystwo Patriotyczne (Patriotic Society). As the leader of the moderate faction, he had a major influence on the direction of the uprising. After the uprising was defeated, he went into exile in Paris.
