An old town in Tagawa County, located in the central north of Fukuoka Prefecture, on the southern slope of Mount Fukuchi. Since the mid-Meiji period, it developed as a coal mining town, with the main settlement of Ikata at its center. In 1964, all coal mines were closed, and factories producing low-level electrical appliances and other products were established, and residential development also progressed. In March 2006, it merged with Kaneda Town and Akaike Town in Tagawa County to become Fukuchi Town in Tagawa County. Area: 18.38 km2. Population: 7,906 (2003). 福岡県中北部,福智山南斜面を占める田川郡の旧町。明治中期以後,主集落伊方を中心に,炭鉱町として発展。1964年全炭鉱が閉山し,弱電などの工場が立地,宅地化も進む。2006年3月,田川郡金田町,赤池町と合併し町制,田川郡福智町となる。18.38km2。7906人(2003)。
