〘Noun〙① A unit of length in the Ritsuryo system. The Ritsuryo system divided shaku into large and small shaku, stipulating that the large shaku be used as a geodetic measure, and the rest be small shaku. One small shaku and two sun is equivalent to one large shaku. The large shaku in this Ritsuryo system refers to the Goryeo shaku (komajaku) , which is thought to have existed before the Ritsuryo system, and the small shaku became the large shaku in Wadou. [Ryo Gikai (718)]② A unit of length revised in the 6th year of the Wadou period ( 713 ). The small shaku in the Ritsuryo system was changed to large shaku. The small shaku in the Ritsuryo system, i.e. the large shaku in Wadou, became Tenpyo shaku, which became the origin of the later kanji shaku. However, Tenpyo shaku was slightly shorter than kanji shaku, and is thought to be about 9 sun 8 bu (29.7 centimeters) of the kanji shaku.
