The Babylonian language of southern Mesopotamia. It is a Semitic language and one of the two major dialects of Akkadian, along with Assyrian. It was spoken from about 2000 BC and was used as a common language in the Near East in the 9th century BC, but was gradually replaced by Aramaic in the 7th and 6th centuries BC.
