Tarama Island

Tarama Island

It is an island that belongs to the Miyako Islands of Okinawa Prefecture and is located almost in the middle of Miyako Island and Ishigaki Island. It has an area of ​​19.76 square kilometers and a maximum elevation of 34 meters. It is the main island of Tarama Village and is a low island made entirely of Ryukyu limestone. Agriculture, mainly sugarcane, is popular, but in recent years vegetable cultivation has been in the spotlight. It is also known for the well-preserved folk events that have been held here since ancient times. It is about 15 minutes by charter boat from Maedomari Port to Minna Island (area 2.15 square kilometers, registered population 4 in 2009), located about 10 kilometers north. There is an air route from Miyako Airport and a sea route from Hirara Port on Miyako Island. Minna Island and the surrounding sea area are designated as Tarama Prefectural Natural Park. Population 1,335 (2009).

沖縄県宮古列島(みやこれっとう)に属し、宮古島と石垣島のほぼ中央に位置する島。面積19.76平方キロメートルで最高標高34メートル。多良間村の主島で、全島が琉球(りゅうきゅう)石灰岩からなる低島。サトウキビを中心とした農業が盛んで、近年は野菜づくりが脚光を浴びてきた。また古くから民俗行事がよく残されていることで知られている。北約10キロメートルにある水納島(みんなじま)(面積2.15平方キロメートル、2009年の住民登録人口4)とは、前泊港よりチャーター船で約15分。宮古空港より空路があり、また宮古島平良(ひらら)港からの航路がある。水納島と周辺海域とともに多良間県立自然公園に指定される。人口1335(2009)。
