A publishing company founded by Ishikawa Takemi. Headquarters in Kanda Surugadai, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo. Established in 1916 under the name Tokyo Kasei Kenkyukai (Tokyo Home Economics Research Association), the company established its foundations the following year with the launch of Shufu no Tomo (Shufu no Tomo). In 1921, the company changed its name to Shufu no Tomosha. Practical articles on topics such as household finances, cooking, and kimono gained popularity amid a social climate in which education on good wives and wise mothers was encouraged. Combined with the advertising for Shufu no Tomo after Marriage, the company rapidly gained readers, and within a few years of its launch, it established a firm foothold in the highly competitive women's magazine world (see Women's Magazines). Following a one-company-one-magazine policy, the company poured all of its profits into improving the magazine, and actively cooperated with national policy during the Pacific War.
