Giant clam - Oojakogai (English spelling)

It is a bivalve of the family Tridacna, class Bivalvia, phylum Mollusca. It is the largest of all bivalves, reaching a shell length of 1.4 meters and a weight of 230 kilograms. It lives in the intertidal zone of the coral reefs of the western Pacific Ocean south of Okinawa, at depths of about 30 meters, with its ventral edge facing upwards. Its shell is a horizontally long fan-shaped shell with several thick radial ribs on its surface, and the ventral edge is greatly wavy according to these. The shell surface is grayish white with no markings and coarse growth veins. Juveniles have byssus threads, but older ones do not. The mantle edge is parasitized by the symbiotic unicellular algae Zooxantella , which causes the mantle to be colorful, just like other Tridacna species. It has a lot of meat, and the adductor muscles are edible. In addition, because its shell is deep and huge, it is used to decorate water basins in the area where it is produced.
