Bermudez, J.de (English spelling)

...Other activities include ship repair and the cultivation of vegetables and flowers. In 1515, the Spaniard Oviedo sailed nearby, but attributed the discovery to his compatriot Juan de Bermúdez's voyage (1503), hence the local name. Later, in 1609, a party led by the Englishman George Somers, who was going to colonize Virginia, was shipwrecked there, and settlement began. In 1684, it became a territory of the British Crown.
