Ancient Greek philosopher, circa 160 or 159 BC - 80 BC. Born in Larissa, a city in Thessaly, northern Greece. After studying under Callicles, a disciple of Carneades, in his hometown, he traveled to Athens to study under Cleitomacus, and succeeded him as head of the Academy in 110 or 109 BC. In 88 BC, during the First Mithridatic War, he fled from Athens to Rome to escape the fighting, where he taught philosophy and rhetoric. His pupils included the poet Catullus and his son, but the most famous of all was Cicero. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
