Kudzu cloth

Japanese:
Kudzu cloth

A woven fabric made from the bast fibers of a legume plant called kudzu, kudzu vine, or makuzu, which is one of the seven herbs of autumn.

These kudzu vines are boiled, soaked in running water, fermented in green grass, beaten repeatedly in water, and exposed to sunlight and air to turn into fibers. Originally, kudzu was used for both the warp and weft, and it was used for clothing and soil sifting, but nowadays cotton or silk is used for the warp threads, and kudzu is used only for the weft threads.

It is often used for covering sliding doors, walls, and decorative materials. Its production in the Kakegawa area of Shizuoka Prefecture has been famous since the Edo period, but it was also woven in Saji, Karatsu City.
