A moth belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Sphingidae. It is the largest species of sphingidae in Japan, with females having a wingspan of up to 160 mm. The forewings are white with several black bands, and the outer edges are curved like sawtooth. It is distributed from northern India through southern China to Japan and Taiwan, and those that live in the Tokai region and west of Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu are considered to be the subspecies nawai . It only appears for a short period in early spring. The larvae parasitize plum, peach, Japanese plum, and Somei-Yoshino cherry trees, so they appear in orchards and places with roadside trees. Both the larvae and adults make a scuffing sound when caught. [Hiroshi Inoue] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
