The six perfect virtues that should be practiced by Mahayana Buddhist seekers. Paramita is a transliteration of the Sanskrit word pāramitā. The six are: (1) the perfect virtue of charity (dana paramita), (2) the perfect virtue of observance of precepts (shiki paramita), (3) the perfect virtue of patience (shiki paramita), (4) the perfect virtue of effort (shiki paramita), (5) the perfect virtue of concentration of mind (shitra paramita), and (6) the perfect virtue of enlightenment, which is the ultimate goal of Buddhism (prajna paramita). The last of these is the foundation of the first five. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
