…The dispatch of troops to Ryukyu was carried out against the background of this policy towards Ming. That is, in March 1806, the Shimazu clan conspired to invade Amami Oshima of the Ryukyus. This was because on August 15 of the previous year, Matsuura of Hirado, Hizen, had informed the Shimazu clan that he had been ordered by the shogunate on July 28 to repatriate a Ryukyu ship that had washed ashore there and to consult with Ryukyu regarding the pending issue of visits to the Ryukyus.
