Tribal music

...The terms folk music and folk song are often used in Europe, America, and Canada because they are useful for distinguishing between the various musical genres that are based on social classes. In North America in particular, it has become necessary to distinguish not only between art music and folk music, but also between popular music associated with the city, the masses, and the mass media, and tribal music of small ethnic groups such as the American Indians. However, when there is no distinction between social classes, or when there is a distinction but no musical genre of its own, it is meaningless to apply the term folk music to that culture.
