Mitomycin

An anticancer antibiotic isolated in 1956 from the culture medium of the actinomycete Streptomyces caespitosus in a joint study by Fujiki Hata of the Kitasato Institute and Shigetoshi Wakaki of Kyowa Hakko Kogyo. There are three types, A, B, and C, but C is the most excellent in terms of anticancer activity and stability. It is a water-soluble, blue-purple crystal. It is said to be the most widely effective of all anticancer antibiotics. It inhibits the biosynthesis of nucleic acids and is thought to suppress the division and proliferation of cancer cells. Side effects include a significant decrease in white blood cells and thrombocytopenia.

1956年に北里研究所の秦藤樹と協和発酵工業の若木重敏らの協同研究によって，放線菌 Streptomyces caespitosusの培養液から得られた抗癌性の抗生物質。A，B，Cなどの種類があるが，Cが抗癌性，安定性の点で最もすぐれている。水溶性で青紫色の結晶。抗癌性抗生物質のうち最も広範囲に有効といわれる。核酸の生合成を阻害し，癌細胞の分裂，増殖を抑制するものとみられる。副作用としては，顕著な白血球や血小板減少などがある。
