Japanese: ドゥクン（英語表記）dukun

A vague general term for professional magicians and prayer practitioners in Java, Indonesia, which are divided into various functions. The medicine man, dukun jampi, and the midwife, dukun bay, are the most visible and indispensable in people's lives. On the other hand, overlapping with these, there are various dukuns who are believed to have mastered some kind of secret art and to be able to predict the future and people's fortunes, or to have magical influences on people. The knowledge and arts they use are a mixture of indigenous elements as well as Hindu and Islamic mystical elements.

インドネシア，ジャワの専門的呪者，祈禱者の漠然とした総称で，実態はさまざまの機能に分化している。呪医ドゥクン･ジャンピ，産婆ドゥクン･バイなどは最もよく目につき，人々の暮しに欠かせない存在である。一方，これらと重なり合って，なんらかの秘術を身につけ，未来や人の運勢を予知したり，人の身の上に呪的影響を及ぼすと信じられている各種のドゥクンがいる。その用いる知識や術は，土着的なものに加えて，ヒンドゥーやイスラムの神秘主義的要素が混合した雑多なものである。
