"The Story of Yesta Berlin" (film) - Yesta Berlin Story

…born in Helsinki, the capital of Finland, to Russian Jewish parents. He adapted a series of novels by Nobel Prize-winning author Selma Lagerlöf into films (The Flame of Fate (1919), The Blizzard (1919), The Bonds of the Storm (1920), The Story of Gunnar Hede (1923), and The Story of Gjösta Berling (1924), and together with Victor Sösleim, he helped to create the first golden age of Swedish cinema. Louis B. Mayer, vice president of MGM, saw his film "The Story of Gestalt Berlin," featuring actress Greta Gustafson (later known as Garbo), whom he had discovered on stage, and was impressed. In 1925, he was "imported" to Hollywood with Garbo. He made four films, including "Imperial Hotel" (1926), starring Pola Negri, but his artistic temperament and perfectionism did not suit the Hollywood climate (he was dropped midway through the film "The Eyes of a Woman" (1926), starring Garbo), and unlike Garbo, who went on to become a star, he returned to Japan in despair and died of an illness at the age of 45.
