The central town of the Suwa Basin in Shinano Province. The town was formed in the area of Takashima Castle (present-day Suwa City, Nagano Prefecture) of the Suwa Domain (Takashima Domain) as a combination of Kami-Suwa-shuku (established in the area of Shimokuwabara Village) and Kami-Suwa Onsen on the Koshu Road. It is located in the southeast of Lake Suwa, and the first place was officially named Kami-Suwa Village, which was established in 1874. The original center was near Suwakamisha (Suwa Taisha Shrine) at the foot of Mount Moriya, south of Lake Suwa, and in the Middle Ages it flourished due to the rise of Suwa faith and the activities of the Suwa clan samurai. In the early modern period, the center shifted to the area of Takashima Castle and the post town, which were established to the north, east of the lake. Takashima Castle was centered on Takashima Castle, which was built on the lakeshore by Hineno Takayoshi in 1590, and the Suwa clan, who were returned to the domain in 1601, continued to develop the castle and the area around it. The Koshu Road runs from southeast to northwest through Shimokuwabara Village, and most of the castle town ran along this road. In Kami-Suwa-juku, four towns (56 ken) along the road, including Kuwabara-cho and Kami-cho, were designated as horse-drawn carriage areas, and a wholesaler was established there in 1646. In the late Edo period, there were about 630 townhouses along the road, and a streetscape was formed on the north and south sides of the road.
