It is an evergreen perennial plant of the Agavaceae family (APG classification: Asparagaceae). It has almost no stems, and the short rhizomes thicken and spread horizontally. The leaves grow in clusters, are long and thin, 30-45 cm long, 2-3 cm wide, flexible, drooping at the top, and are powdery white-green in color. The fibers come loose from the edges in the form of white threads, hence the name. In June and July, it produces panicles on flower stalks 1-2 meters tall, and white flowers with six petals, each about 4 cm long, open downward. It is native to southern North America, and is planted in gardens in areas south of the Kanto region. It is propagated by division. The variety, Filitran, has yellow stripes on its leaves.
