French film. Made in 1935. Released in Japan in 1937 (Showa 12). Directed by Jacques Feydé, based on the original story by Charles Spaak, screenplay by Feydé and Bernard Simmel, art by Lazare Meisson. In 1616, the strongest Spanish army of the time invaded the small city of Boom in the small country of Flanders (now Belgium). The mayor and the other men in the city did not know what to do. However, the mayor's wife (Françoise Rosay) took the lead, and the women dealt with the invading army as best they could, allowing the soldiers to pass through safely. This is a historical comedy. The entire film is filled with irony, satire, and wit, and the magnificent beauty of the figures is reminiscent of Flemish paintings. It is a masterpiece that exudes an artistic fragrance like mellow champagne, and it was the work of a lifetime for Feydé. From the perspective of film history, this film is the most monumental work of the 1930s, as it embodied the relative perfection of expressive technology in the early days of talkies and can be said to have marked the beginning of artistic activity through film.
