King who established the northern kingdom of ancient Israel. Reigned 926-907 BC. Initially, he was an able bureaucrat under King Solomon, supervising forced labor, but became critical of the king's policies and went into exile under Shishak (Sheshonk) I, founder of the 22nd dynasty of Egypt. After Solomon's death, he returned to Egypt and led the 10 northern tribes in opposition to Solomon's successor Rehoboam, achieving independence and becoming king of the northern kingdom of Israel. He was in constant military conflict with the southern kingdom of Judah, and built a temple to replace the one in Jerusalem.
