...Other freight lines include an 11.3km branch line between Yao and Sugimotomachi, and a 4.7km freight branch line between Hirano and Kudara, which belongs to JR Freight. The Minatomachi-Nara section was built and opened by Osaka Railway, and the Nara-Nagoya section by Kansai Railway. In 1900, the two companies merged to become Kansai Railway, which was purchased by the government in 1907 and became a national railway line. The Minatomachi-Kashiwara section was opened by Osaka Railway in 1889, and the Tsuge-Yokkaichi section was completed by Kansai Railway in 1990. It was subsequently extended, and the Nagoya-Minatomachi section was completed in 1999.

...The company was originally called Nara Kido (Nara Railway Company), and in 1956 it linked up with the Sangu Kyuko Electric Railway (Yamada Line), running the longest distance train in Japan at the time, covering 137.3 km between Uehonmachi (Osaka) and Ujiyamada. It then merged with the Ise Electric Railway (Nagoya Line), Osaka Railway (Minami Osaka Line), and others, and in 1961 merged with Nankai Railway to form Kintetsu Railway (the Nankai Line was separated in 1947). In 1984, it converted the Nagoya Line to standard gauge, making it possible to operate direct trains from Osaka to Nagoya. ...
