A collective name for six temples built as imperial temples in the late Heian period in the Okazaki area of Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto City, including Hossho-ji, Sonsho-ji, Saisho-ji, Ensho-ji, Josho-ji, and Ensho-ji. Each temple was subordinate to Ninna-ji, and had a chief priest or steward. All of the temples had vast and magnificent grounds, but they were destroyed during the wars of the Jokyu and Onin eras, and eventually fell into disuse. (1) Hossho-ji Temple Built in 1075 (Shoho 2) at the request of Emperor Shirakawa, a memorial service was held there in 1077 (Shoryaku 1). It was the grandest of all temples, with a main hall, lecture hall, Amida hall, and nine-story pagoda. (2) Sonsho-ji Temple: Built at the request of Emperor Horikawa, a memorial service was held in 1102 (Kōwa 4). (6) Ensho-ji Temple: Built at the request of Emperor Konoe, a memorial service was held in 1149 (Kyōan 5).
