Japanese larch (Larch) - Japanese larch (English spelling)
It has local names such as Fujimatsu (Fujimatsu) (illustration). It is a large deciduous tree of the pine family that grows in sunny areas in the highlands of Japan, and is beautiful both in its new green and yellow leaves. It is said that gardeners began calling it Karamatsu in the late Edo period because the shape of the new leaves resembles pines in Chinese paintings. It reaches a height of 30m, and the bark on the trunk is peeled off in dark brown scales. It has a conical shape, with several thick branches growing in whorls. There are long branches and short branches 3-4mm long, and the long branches have spiral-shaped, linear needles 1-3cm long, while the short branches have bundles of needles. Flowers bloom at the tops of 2-4 year old short branches at the same time as the new leaves appear in early spring.
